The Department of Statistics was founded in 1941 by Gertrude M. Cox, who established a tradition of excellence. Building on her vision, the department has maintained its applied orientation while providing a solid foundation in statistical theory. Our department is the second oldest Department of Statistics in the nation. More than 972 students have received Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from our department. Our graduates are making valuable contributions to the profession and to society. They are working as consulting statisticians in government, industry and academic institutions.

With a core faculty of 34 representing virtually all major statistical specializations, the department continues to be recognized as a world leader in graduate education and research in statistics. Areas of research include time series, econometrics, ecology, genetics, biomathematics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, linear and nonlinear models, design of experiments, sampling, probability, environmental applications, statistical process and quality control, statistical computing, nonparametric regression and inference, stochastic processes, statistical inference and Bayesian theory.
