Following the NC State University guildlines on reviews, the department will review the performance of all faculty holding permanent tenure. A Comprehensive Review Committee (CRC) will be elected by the faculty to review all Full Professors every five years, and all Associate Professors (holding permanent tenure) every three years. This review augments the annual report of faculty regarding their activities, the annual review of all faculty by the head of the department, and the rigorous reviews required for promotion and tenure decisions. The CRC will include the review of teaching for tenured faculty in its duties.
The department has established rigorous standards for the granting of tenure. Implicit in the tenure decision is the expectation that each professor will continue to contribute effectively to the department, college, university and profession. The purpose of the review by the CRC is to assure that the standards of performance for granting tenure and promotion are continued throughout the career. The emphasis or composition of a professor's activities: teaching, research, outreach and service, will undoubtedly change over time, but the obligation to contribute positively to the total effort of the department continues. Should the situation arise when the performance of a professor falls short, colleagues are best equipped both to make that determination, and to provide the proper advice and counsel for directions toward improvement.
The Comprehensive Review Committee will consist of five members, all holding permanent tenure, each serving three years on a rotating basis, with elections held each year during the spring semester. At all times, at least three members will be full professors, and at least one will be a tenured associate professor.
Each year the CRC will determine the faculty to be reviewed, and inform each professor to be reviewed in writing. Sitting on the CRC should not affect the schedule; a member of the CRC will excuse her/himself from the discussion of her/his own review.
During the fall semester, the CRC shall review each professor on its list for that year. Each professor under review will provide a written statement of professional activities and achievements for the period of time since the last review (or the last five years for full professors in the initial round). This written statement may take the form of a summary statement and annual activity reports and plans for professional development. Other information relevant to the review includes student evaluations of teaching for the same period of time and reports by at least two members of the CRC on the professor's classroom performance. All written materials to be included in the review shall be assembled by the end of October.
The guidelines for Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure for the Department of Statistics describe the standards of performance for the granting of tenure. These standards form the benchmark for the performance of professors under review. The CRC shall determine by majority vote whether the professor's combined contributions in teaching, research, outreach and service meet these performance criteria. Indicators that a professor does not meet these performance standards include consistent evaluations of unsatisfactory teaching, or a reduction of effort in one area of activity that is not accompanied by an increase in activity in another.
By the end of December, the CRC will transmit a written assessment of whether each reviewed professor meets or does not meet the performance criteria. This report, as well as the CRC's deliberations, shall remain confidential. For any professor whom the CRC assesses does not meet the performance criteria, the CRC will transmit to that individual and to the department head a description of the deficiencies and written advice to the individual regarding improvement to meet the performance criteria. In this situation, the CRC must provide the opportunity for the professor to consult with the CRC regarding its assessment and advice, and his/her plan for professional development.
Further consequences of a negative assessment, including subsequent reviews, are described more fully in the Guidelines on Reviews. The official source is http://www.ncsu.edu/provost/fh/profrev.htm#reviews
