Missouri University of Science & Technology invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, with the assumption of the position in the Fall of 2013. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Statistics or a closely related discipline. Applicants must hold the rank of full professor or be qualified for tenure and appointment to the rank of full professor at the time of appointment. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding scholar with a strong research reputation, have a clear and demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, and possess a personable disposition with demonstrated leadership skills.
We seek a dynamic individual with evidence of effective administration of an academic unit, or with clear and demonstrable administrative potential. The candidate should be a strong voice for the
department, enhancing the prestige and visibility of the department across campus. The successful candidate will effectively communicate campus issues to the department and department needs to the administration. The candidate must also be a team player, demonstrating superior people skills and dedication to supporting collegiality both within and outside of the department, while articulating and advocating for the department’s needs. The ideal candidate would build on the existing strengths of the department and develop new areas of excellence that would further enhance the department’s reputation both nationally and internationally.
The successful candidate should have a clear vision for an active and highly visible departmental role that is well-integrated into the applied science and engineering research focus of the campus. A commitment to the effective implementation of the department’s strategic plan and the development of additional goals to further strengthen and grow the department’s role on campus would be expected from the candidate.
The Department consists of 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 4 ranked non-tenure-track faculty, and 7 adjunct faculty. The faculty members are active in research in various areas of pure mathematics, statistics, and applied mathematics. The department has B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, with 42 graduate students and 75 undergraduate majors. The Ph.D. program has three emphasis areas: mathematics, computational and applied mathematics, and statistics.
