Facilities/Computing Resources
Faculty and graduate students have full access to Departmental computing resources and the university-wide Unity system that provide the backbone for research and communications for the Department. A full-time system administrator assists faculty, staff, and students, and ensures the optimal operation of Departmental computing facilities. The Department maintains its own file storage systems for students, faculty, and staff. The Departmental servers also support state-of-the-art electronic mail and web facilities. Computer resources are tied together through a high-speed Ethernet network, giving users immediate and full access. A first-generation wireless communication system is also in operation. Faculty have PCs or workstations running the latest Microsoft Windows or Linux/Solaris operating systems, and graduate students share two large computing labs with over 45 PCs and workstations. In addition, faculty and students have access to numerous college and university maintained labs. Campus workstations include both Linux/Solaris and Windows environments with access to a common filesystem. The latest versions of all important software are available, including SAS, Matlab, and Maple, as well as the open-source R, and compilers for programming languages such as Fortran and C.
Shared computing systems for large-scale computing tasks include rack-mounted clusters of both Linux and Windows machines, tailored towards the needs of the department. Other college/campus resources are available, such as a Solaris LSF system and a Linux Beowulf system.
