"Reinventing Regression Thru Graphics"
ABSTRACT
This talk is on an emerging theory for
regression that provides a context which links
regression with the construction, characterization and
interpretation of graphical displays of the data.
One underlying premise is that the usefulness of modern
graphical displays might be increased substantially if we can recognize
situations in which low-dimensional views, the only ones that
are possible in practice, provide full or "sufficient" information about
the regression. The ability to recognize such situations requires
a context for connecting the graphics with the statistics.
For this purpose, regression is viewed quite broadly as the study of the conditional distribution of the response given the predictors. The context is similarly broad, requiring few scope-limiting conditions. The focus will be on fundamental ideas, and likely practical benefits, rather than on particular implementations or methods. The presentation will include examples.
