"Demand for Local Long Distance"

ABSTRACT

Recent deregulation in the telecommunications market has resulted in an "opening" of the market for local long distance (intra-LATA toll) to competition. As a result, local telephone providers have dropped their tariffs for local long distance to meet competition while raising local rates to offset the lost in long distance revenue. The amount of revenue lost is a function of consumer's sensitivity to price which we estimate via parametric and semi-parametric censored/truncated regression. We find telephone consumers are less price sensitive than previous studies have concluded.
