"National Air Quality and Emission Trends -- The Nation's Report Card on Air Pollution"
ABSTRACT
How do we determine whether or not environmental improvement in the air is taking place? How do we take millions of environmental measurements and turn them into environmental information to help decision-makers properly direct and focus the National air pollution control program? For the past 25 years, EPA has evaluated the trends and status of our Nation's air quality and has published the results in an annual report. National trends in the major air pollutants will be presented with a focus on particulate matter and ozone. The new air quality standards for fine particulate matter and ozone will be highlighted. Both ambient measurements, collected across the United States, and emission trends, based upon engineering estimates, will be presented focussing on the 10-year period between 1988 and 1997.
