"VIGORE - Vertical Integration of Outreach, Research and Education Activities"

ABSTRACT

Our VIGORE program is a model for educating a future generation of problem solvers. This seminar presents the past, current and future activities of the VIGORE program at our department. Specifically, Dr. J.-C. Lu will give an overview of the program's accomplishments and direction. Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Li and graduate students Eric Grau, Weixin Zhou, Eric Rying, Joel Fenner and Di Chen will summarize their research activities. These presentations provide evidence of the success of the VIGORE program: that its research activities have practical motivation, show potential in advancing statistical methodology, create opportunities for training students' thinking and communication skills, connect to postgraduation career placement, and are directed to funding potentials. Statistical issues involved include robust estimates in spatial time series models, structured wavelet models, quasi-likelihood for random scale models, parameter estimation based on approximation methods, equipment fault detection based on wavelet decomposition of process signals, statistical model and process control in corporated manufacturing environment, and survival analysis. Finally, this seminar demonstrates the necessity and feasibility of the VIGORE program at North Carolina State University.
