"Better Sports Through Statistics"

ABSTRACT

Nowhere are statistics more abundant than in the sports section of the newspaper. A great deal of attention is given to all kinds of data in the sports section, but less attention has been paid to the ways in which the field of statistics can contribute to sports. This talk reviews three ways in which statistics can improve the way we understand and the way we play sports. The three subjects covered: Markov chain models for finding optimal baseball strategy, issues related to rating college football teams, and estimating the probability of winning a game.
