"Bioinformatics: A New Graduate Program at NC State University"
ABSTRACT
Managing and interpreting genomic data has come to be called Bioinformatics. Generally the emphasis has been on data management, and this remains a key element of the field. At NC State, however, there will also be an emphasis on the development of statistical methodolgy for making inferences from genomic data. This emphasis will be reflected in the initial composition of the Bioinformatics Research Center and it will influence some of the courses in the Bioinformatics track of the Genomic Sciences Graduate Program.
Although it will include other computing and biological components, Bioinformatics at NC State will build on current campus activity in statistical genetics. In this seminar, faculty from the Program in Statistical Genetics will describe some of their research that develops statistical methods to locate and characterize genes, to describe the evolutionary process, to predict protein structure, and to identify individuals.
