"Climate Change and Statistics"
ABSTRACT
One question about climate change is whether an observed change, such as the 0.6C increase in global temperature over the past century, is too large to be explained by natural variability. This question closely resembles the statistical test of a null hypothesis, in which we ask whether some aspect of the data is too discrepant with that hypothesis to be explained by pure chance. We explore this resemblance, and assess the role of statistical analyses in answering the climate change question.
