"Some unique statistical challenges arising in mixture models "

ABSTRACT

This talk is a prelude to the special topics class of next semester. I will discuss two identifiability puzzles found in mixture models: the "labelling problem" and the "breakdown of the degrees of freedom rule", and discuss possible solutions. If time allows, I will discuss the relationship between modality and the number of components in higher dimensional mixtures.
