Success in obtaining outside funding through research grants is strongly encouraged in today's competitive academic environment. Not only do grant funds support an individual's own research endeavors, they also are essential to the greater research enterprise of a institution, supporting postdoctoral positions, students, and infrastructure. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of the largest supporters of research in statistics in the US, with primary focus on funding research of relevance in biomedical and public health applications.

This seminar will provide an overview of grant opportunities at NIH, describe the process by which grants are submitted and reviewed, and offer some guidance on how to prepare a successful grant application based on the speaker's practical experience writing NIH grants and serving on NIH grant review panels.

(An excellent article on this topic, written by Louise Ryan , may be found in the March 2002 issue of the Amstat News.)
